PLOT SUMMARY: Let’s wear disguises and play in the forest! The Grammardog Guide to AS YOU LIKE IT features sentences from the play in 16 grammar, style and proofreading quizzes that reinforce plot, characters and themes. The play is set in a forest in France where characters have fled to thinking that life will be simple in the woods. The plot is a crowd-pleaser because it’s a farce full of mistaken identity, lovers who fall in love with someone who is in love with someone else, and appearances by clowns, lions, shepherds, musicians and entertainers.
Orlando is in love with Rosalind. He is persecuted by his brother Oliver and forced to hide out in the Forest of Arden. Frederick, the brother of the Duke, drives the Duke into exile in the forest. Frederick also banishes Rosalind from court, so she and her best friend Celia (Frederick’s daughter) run away to the forest. Rosalind disguises herself as a young man (Ganymede) and Celia disguises herself as a poor lady (Aliena). The girls are accompanied by the court clown Touchstone. Orlando meets up with the Duke who is living simply in the woods. Orlando writes love poems to Rosalind and posts them on trees. Celia disguised as Aliena and Rosalind disguised as Ganymede buy a cottage in the forest. Eventually Orlando meets Rosalind but doesn’t recognize her disguised as a young man. Rosalind as Ganymede has fun counseling Orlando on his love life.
Meanwhile Rosalind dressed as Ganymede has other problems. Phoebe, the shepherdess, has fallen in love with Ganymede. Silvius is in love with Phoebe. Touchstone the clown has fallen in love with Audrey, another shepherdess. Finally all the lovers fight over who will win whom in marriage. Orlando’s brother Oliver shows up in the forest. Orlando rescues Oliver from a lion which causes Oliver to apologize for mistreating his brother. Oliver falls in love with Celia (Aliena). The final scene is a big wedding of four couples. Orlando marries Rosalind, Oliver marries Celia, Silvius marries Phoebe and Touchstone marries Audrey. Frederick has a change of heart and joins a religious order. The Duke is restored to power.
